Hana Assafiri has dedicated her professional and private life to removing barriers that prevent women from living prosperous lives. Hana is an agitator for social change and strong communities, a Muslim feminist, a mentor, and unapologetically speaks truth to power. Her restaurant, Moroccan Soup Bar, provides employment opportunities for marginalised members of the community. It also forms the setting of monthly events such as “Speed Date a Muslim”, which brings together academics, journalists and community to discuss contemporary issues with a focus on women’s issues, racism, as well as the need for plurality and a progressive vision. Hana has been awarded TimeOut’s Legend award, been included in Ai Weiwei’s famous collection of portraits of local social activists, and was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2017 in recognition of her contribution to local communities and human rights.
