AMSA Global Health is AMSA’s largest committee, seeking to connect, inspire, and empower medical students to effect change towards global health equity through unified, responsible, and sustainable action. The committee serves members from 20 Global Health Groups (GHGs) across Australian medical schools. AMSA Global Health Representatives from these GHGs form the AMSA Global Health Council, which gathers twice a year. AMSA Global Health is overseen by an Executive, elected annually by the Council, and a wider Management Team.
The advocacy work of AMSA Global Health is mainly implemented through its Global Health Projects, namely:
AMSA Crossing Borders, which focuses on refugee and asylum seeker health
AMSA Code Green, which focuses on the effects of climate change on health
AMSA Reproductive Rights, which focuses on equitable sexual and reproductive health
AMSA Global Health provides many educational and training opportunities for global health-minded medical students, such as the twice-yearly Councils, the annual Training New Trainers program, and a biannual peer-reviewed journal called Vector.
There are also many international opportunities provided by AMSA Global Health. As an official member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ Association (IFMSA), AMSA Gobal Health has a strong and recognised external representation on the wider international medical community. Our policies, advocacy work, and projects have been frequently recognised by the WHO and UN, with a biannual AMSA Global Health delegation participating at the General Assembly.
